Sloth ~ Acedia
How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? ------------- Proverbs 6:9
PERSONALITY & DEMEANOR
The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish; It wearieth him to bring it again to his mouth. Proverbs 26:15
Sloth lives with a man in his parents' basement, existing on pizza and coffee. The man, Mike, barely even leaves his chair to wash any more. He used to have a job, but he was late one too many times and got fired, and looking for a new one is far too much work. His parents indulge him because it's too hard to make him listen. Sloth likes it that way. It's an easy way to live, and he even has the bed all to himself because Mike doesn't usually make it that far. He used to be fat, but he's started wasting away of late, his muscles withering, folds of skin going wrinkly. His parents haven't noticed his deep depression yet. Sloth is beginning to come to the end of this one's usefulness. He'll have to go before Mike dies. He doesn't like the lethargy that comes with an absorbed death.
He doesn't like his siblings much. He's probably the most apathetic of the Sins, being as he isn't motivated by desire for something, but desire to avoid something. The rest are far too motivated by their own motivation. He is, however, very able to feed from the lazy, the selfish, the poor, the miserable. Anyone unable to see a way out of their own troubles, anyone who spends more time gaming than talking to real people, anyone who gorges on pizza and chinese instead of cooking for themselves. If it pleases him to make your problems so overbearing you can do nothing, that is what will happen.
Sloth is a little emo. It's his job to bring depression and hopelessness to people, so he affects it on himself. He listens to emo music and glares at people. He does have a secret love for classical music and movie soundtracks. He spends a lot of time watching movies because it's something you can do without doing anything, and you don't notice how much food you eat when you're watching a screen. He is far more active than the people he feeds from, though, being that the worse they feel, the more sprightly he is.
Being self-concerned above all, if Sloth can avoid a problem rather than face it, he will. He doesn't like confrontation and lies easily to avoid it.
The sluggard saith, There is a lion without: I shall be slain in the streets. Proverbs 22:13
Sloth has been around as long as people have been around. His initial incarnation was as Acedia, defined by the Oxford Concise Dictionary of the Christian Church as "a state of restlessness and inability either to work or to pray". Sloth is also defined as neglecting what God has spoken, and being physically and emotionally inactive, and in recent years it also encompasses plain laziness. The Bible has a lot to say on "the sluggard" and inactivity, and not following God's word.
He has walked the earth for a long time, and everywhere there are people, there is laziness and apathy. He went to America with the first Christians, and hasn't gone any further than the east coast the entire time he's been there.
Most of the time, Sloth exists as a man. Sometimes, like his other siblings, he can manifest as female, as able to reflect feminine insecurities and laziness as masculine. For a time, she lived on a cotton plantation in the South, acting as a trophy wife to a man twice her apparent age, lying about being fanned by slaves and watching them work to her own satisfaction. After that, she turned male for most of the 20th Century, using his poorer physical form to avoid having to serve in wartime, feeding off the guilt of other men unable or too afraid to serve. For a few years in the '50s, Sloth lived as a suburban housewife, playing onto the neurosis of other women who felt trapped in their own homes. He didn't particularly enjoy the '70s, although the nuclear threat did add a nice flavour of fear through to the '80s. These days of self-diagnosed internet medical conditions and the easy ability to anonymously lose faith and hope in your own self-worth give Sloth a ready source of laziness and depression to feed off.
